How Much Will The Therapy Help?

As the therapist sat down in her leather desk chair she wondered if she could help these clients in just five more weeks. She turned towards her computer workstation desk to make notes on the first group therapy meeting. The files were private, encrypted to keep the information safe. She wondered what the future sessions would reveal about each. She expected each client to make improvements in their behavior.

They were all affected by phobias of some type. OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) was indicated and one of the females was intermittently blurting out sentences and her ability to segue was nonexistent. The plan was for everyone to benefit and contribute something during group interaction. It was expected that they would help themselves and each other during the course of six weeks of therapy.

At the start of the session, the man named Clark came in last. He had a black helmet on. She said hello to him and asked about what kind of motorcycle he rode. He stared at her and asked, what motorcycle, I don’t have a motorcycle.

She managed to keep a straight face and offered tea or coffee to everyone. Next she gave them her name and explained briefly how the sessions were expected to proceed. She asked them to give their names one at a time. Edgar told them gruffly who he was. Allen and Ann were next. Lenore was the last one to speak. She immediately interjected the fact she loved oceans.

Edgar rudely retorted that he wasn’t interested in her likes and dislikes. The therapist quickly jumped in and asked who would like to talk about their problems first. Edgar was happy to have his turn to talk. He told how his next door neighbor had allowed a page from a newspaper to blow onto his front lawn and it was extremely inconsiderate.

She asked him how long ago that had happened and he said it was two years ago. Allen pointed out that two years was a long time to hold a grudge. Edgar retorted that it was not Allen’s lawn, but his that had been violated. Lenore pointed out gently that she didn’t think it was done purposely. Edgar gave her a dirty look and stopped talking.

The women were holding small blankets and Lenore put hers over her head acting very upset. The therapist asked why Edgar affected her so badly. Ann interjected a comment about how her bus had been late. No one responded. The therapist led the conversation on to why Edgar had to shout. He said he really didn’t have to. They went on and talked a little more about their lives and what made them unhappy. When the session was over, she walked them out to the hall and said she’d see them Tuesday. They all said a friendly goodbye to her, all except Edgar. He will take work she mused to herself.
