Gifts for to suit everyone this Christmas
The common hot water bottle seems to do the opposite to some furry mammals, who at this time of the year are beginning to hibernate. You are not likely to catch a glimpse of it until the first signs of winter begin to appear. Then as if by magic it materialises! There it is at the bottom of the bed
Of course this is nonsense, but I just wanted to highlight that for most of us a hot water bottle is an aesthetically-challenged object. i don’t have a clue when was the last time that I actually went into a shop and bought one. I am sure it would have been a last-minute idea for an elderly relative at Christmas.
As a country we still appear to have an unbreakable link to them. It was George Mikes, a British author of Hungarian descent, who once poked fun at us as a nation. In his cheeky book ‘How to be an alien’, he mentions “Continental people have sex lives, the English have hot water bottles”. It is possible that there was an element of truth in the parody, especially in the days when designs were bland and uninteresting. These are adjectives that probably match a typical continental view of Anglo Saxon sex.
But wait! Many things have changed since then. i wouldn’t have believed it, but these things are actually now considered to be ‘sexy’? I found a site the other day whilst doing random searches, that had a good selection of different styles and shapes. If ever I was looking for unusual gifts to buy, things that you wouldn’t normally find in the high street, this would certainly be the place to start. They have everything here, from buddha statues to retro telephones, and most things in between!
If you are primarily interested in hot water bottles, my favourites are those with a cushion shape, like the ‘Giraffe cushion’. All of these looked extremely comfortable, and probably had therapeutic values for those suffering from lower back or neck pain. They are made with recyclable materials and are guaranteed not to fade – perfect for those individuals who care about the environment.
